Hayati- My Life.

Hayati Magazine- Nigeria’s fast Rising Muslima Magazine.

Hayati- comes from the word, Hayat, which means Life in the Arabic Language; it means My Life.

About- - started MuslimahConvert on Instagram back in August of 2012, it was meant to be a resource for new Muslima converts to grow, learn and understand Islam in an intersectional manner. The first online issue of Hayati launched in November of the same year, after Fatima Togbe, the founder, decided to go beyond just Instagram and try something different.

Hayati Magazine was founded by and for MUSLIM WOMEN. We seek to influence Muslim women’s whole lives by helping them be fashion-forward, smart and modern within the limits of ISLAM. We want to inspire our readers to build not just PERSONAL STYLE but PERSONAL POWER,” Fatima Togbe, Founder/Editor-In-Chief, Hayati Magazine.

In Nigeria, there are hundreds of Magazines rising with each passing day and attempting to break into the mainstream pan African and worldwide magazine. It mainstream magazines, there is something that keeps everyone going, both males and females, and that would be raw representation. It is becoming rampant to have representation in movies, music videos, shows and now magazines. Before, nobody really bothered whether or not vogue had models of colours on their front pages or covers.

Now, it is becoming a phenomenon and something spreading through the globe like wildfire. In the Nigeria media, it is easy to find representation but then it is unfortunately to a certain limit as all cultures and religious faces are not featured or largely promoted in a market as large as the Nigerian one. I first discovered Hayati Magazine about two years ago and I didn’t believe it was a Nigerian based magazine, because of the content and whatnot. As always, I assumed it was an African based abroad doing things over there and maintaining her ethnicity and religion. I was wrong, but happy.
Hayati is a Nigerian based magazine, primarily targeted at the Muslim female population but also working as an umbrella for the average young Nigerian female.

This magazine caters to all in the sense of Fashion, lifestyle, religion, articles and so much more that needs to be expressed, by Muslims, for Muslims and applicable to others, who are very interested in know the common things but from a different perspective.

The reason why I personally appreciate this magazine, would be the fact it is not strictly religious because it understands how vast and broad religion is, almost like a spectrum, and how people in the religion can either be at both ends of the spectrum or just in the middle. It is once again, applicable to everyone out there but of course, concentrated on its primary audience.

(Fall Issue for Hayati Magazine)

Now, some people might not cherish the fact that this magazine is a Muslim magazine, but to be realistic and practical, the Nigerian media market lacks fluid representation. Just the same way, people of colour complain about lack of diversity in certain movies, it is the same way I would complain about lack of diverse magazines in the Nigerian market. If everyone can be represented, it would not only impact personal views and perspectives, but it can aid in helping voices to be heard.

Hayati is a foundation, allowing young Nigerian or just Muslim women in general feel connected, relatable and comfortable with whatever they are going through; because you have stories, articles and more written by Muslimas like ourselves and there’s truly nothing like getting something from someone who connects with you.

A little downside would be the Magazine not having a broad sense of varieties, which are yet to be included but that can still happen in the near future. Some spaces lacking in the magazine could be a segment where readers can send in questions and have them answered by an experienced person. Or perhaps real life stories sent in and shared by other Muslim women, in order for readers to relate and learn a few things. That’s about the few things I see as a downside but it is a personal opinion, so it is very okay to disagree and suggest something else. There is truly little to nothing lacking in the magazine but I have to say that, in order to sound realistic and sincere.

If you are looking for something that will treat Fashion recommendations, lifestyle tips, social issues, media topics and religious treatments, then I would say you should check out Hayati Magazine and decide to judge it by yourself. Or else, you want me to completely influence you into checking it out. It is an online magazine that might be a downside, as there is not Hardcopy for you to carry around and read anywhere you might be going.

HalalCafe- Eid Treat.

Eid Treat.

I love Eid so much, you love Eid and we all love Eid.

There is just something beautiful about the Eids we are blessed to celebrate in Islam. I could go all day rambling but you get me. Any ways, Eid-Ul-Adha is my personal favourite because we all celebrate the same day and you know those annoying people don't disrupt it, except they are celebrating something else two days after Arafah Day.

Any ways I have a little sweet treat for Eid, something that can serve as both an appetiser and as part of a main meal.

All up to how you feel!

Ingredients-

Six chicken sausages.

A packet of toothpicks.

Half a bowl of olive oil (Small bowl).

Curry to taste.

Black pepper to taste.

Dried Thyme to taste.

Dried Parsley to taste.

A jar of Olives.

Some cheese.

Method-

Fill the bowl of olive oil with some curry, black pepper, dried thyme, dried parsley and gently stir till flavours and seasoning infuse.

Slice sausages in styles that work for you, I went for the slanted style.

Mix the sausages in oil marinade and gently stir till the sausages are coated in the marinade.

Gently fry sausages on medium heat.

Slice cheese into thin lines and slice olives as well.

Wrap cheese lines around sausages, pierce with toothpicks and push olives down on it.

Now before this, you can place cheese wrapped sausages in a microwave for a minute and get out before piercing with toothpicks and olives.

Voila, a simple yummy snack is ready for your guests.

I hope this was useful and you enjoy this.

Eid Mubarak from me to you xx.

HalalCafe- Cheese Toasties with Caramalised Apples.

Cheese Toasties Topped with caramalised apples.

Yep, I'm certainly a messy eater and a lover for sticky/sweet snacks.

It's just something worth spending time on and enjoying. Moreover, I am a student, so I am bound to get bored and always ready to nibble on something. So I might as well make it worth it.

Autumn is upon us *jumps while crying* and I love the season, simply because of the scenery and the gloomy atmosphere. I just don't like how it affects my skin and hair, gross.

Any ways, this is something that can be enjoyed for anybody, when the cold is kicking in and you need some tea, coffee or really whatever you want to drink. I'm a tea lover, so I'd go with some lovely flavoured green tea with this one.

Ingredients-

4 pieces of sliced bread.
4 pieces of cheese.
1 apple.
1/4 cup of brown sugar.
1/2 cup of honey.
1/2 cup of water.

remember the ingredients can always differ and please feel free to experiment as always.

Method-

Toast bread.

Slice apple, toss into pan with brown sugar, honey and water. Stir gently until brown sugar melts and infuses with honey. It gives a dark caramel colour and feels sticky, not soggy or heavy.

Divide toasted bread, so you get four slices into eight.

Tear up cheese into little rough pieces and scatter all over bread, arranged on a wide plate suitable for the microwave.

Place in the microwave for 1mins 30 seconds.

Viola!

No lies, this is sweet, filling and very comfy for a lovely day in or if you are someone with kids. I experimented with my baby cousins Lol, and they actually loved it, even the picky one. So, you can try this if you want, and tag me on Instagram if you actually fall through with it.

Lots of love, stay awesome.

HalalCafe- Sticky, Messy & Yummy.

Sticky, Messy & Yummy Chocolate Blocks.

This is such a treat for adults, children and just anybody. To be warned though, it is extra sweet, sticky, and messy. Not to be eaten with class or poise. You just have be ready to indulge in this devilish treat and thank me later.

On y va!

Ingredients-

Chocolate of your choice, but make sure they have no nuts in them.

Two Oreo Biscuits.

A cup of milk.

Half a cup of warm water.

A packet of pecan nuts (If you don't take nuts, choose whatever filling you want).

Method-

Chop chocolates and biscuits into rough blocks, make sure you chop them into little rough pieces because it helps the melting process.

Place a big deep pot on medium heat, fill it with some water. Pour rough pieces of chocolate into a plastic bowl and place it in the pot filled with water.

Start gently stirring the chocolate and biscuit pieces with care.

As it starts melting, pour in the milk and gently stir it in. Also pour in the water and make sure it does not get light. Not too thick and not too light. As normal as possible, so forming becomes easy.

This is so rough, you can see the biscuit crumbs in it, and that is because I did not chop the pieces very well so again, learn from my mistake guys.

Get a plastic cupcake pan of any shape and size, just as you desire.

Now be careful here, make sure it is not rubber. I made the mistake of using a rubber cupcake pan and it made forming take ages and ages. So learn from me and use plastic or any other type you know would made forming easier.

Fill the pan.

Now fill each sections with pecan nuts or whatever filling you choose again.

Clean up the edges to make it a neater and more appealing appearance.

Keep it in refrigerator until it morphs into a hard form and can come out of the cupcake pan.

Enjoy!

Once again if you try this or any of my recipes, let me know via Instagram or Twitter, if you wish.

Lots of love xx

HalalCafe: Chicken Sausage and Mushroom Baked Rice

Rice, Baked with Chicken Sausages and Mushrooms.

Comfort Food.

I am African, Nigerian to be precise, so I grew up around all types of comfort food (some I'm yet to know how to prepare without setting the house ablaze- wife material reduced by yards, I weep.)

So yeah, if there is anything I love, it would be comfort meals, especially for people like me, schooling abroad, cold countries to be specific. Comfort, warm and spicy meals always do the trick for me. And, I love being experimental. Also, Eid-Al Adha is coming right up (tries to hold excitement), and if you are someone who loves carrying meals to people or yeah inviting people to eat. You might want to add this new dish on the menu this year.

Okay, less rambling and let's talk about the menu.

Ingredients-

Rice, well yeah.

A bowl of sliced mushrooms.

A bowl of sliced chicken sausages, I mean it's in the title.

A cup of coconut flakes.

Two eggs.

Olive Oil.

Butter.

Curry Powder to taste.

Salt to taste.

Chicken seasoning to taste.

White Pepper.

Half a cup of chicken stock.

Full cup of Coconut Milk.

Method:

Place a saucepan or wide sized non-stick pot on medium heat. Wash the rice till the drained water is clean.

Melt butter into pan and pour in rice. Stir raw rice with curry powder and white pepper.

Pour in chicken stock as you continue stirring, still on medium heat.

Keep stirring gently, and make sure it does not stick to the pan or burn.

Reduce the heat and gently pour in hot water into the rice, cover and let it cook for 20minutes or less, depending on how soft you enjoy your rice. I personally would advice not making it too soft because you are still going to bake it.

When the rice is cooked, stir in the sliced sausages and mushrooms, not too much stirring but just enough to make flavour and seasoning settle well.

Add some salt and gently stir.

Oil your baking pan and pour in the rice mixture, then spread around the pan.

And now time for the fun part, this is where you add an infusion of flavours, taste and spices into the dish.

Heat up a saucepan, drizzle some olive oil and melt some butter into it.

Pour in some water, not too much.

Season it with salt, white pepper and pretty much any seasoning of your choice.

Ensure the pan is well infused and pour into the baking pan.

Break eggs and mix with little coconut flakes, then smear all over the baking pan, covering the corners of the rice and settling well on it.

Sprinkle remaining coconut flakes all over and place in oven, at a medium temperature.

Be careful, a high temperature will burn the coconut flakes out and some part of the rice, so ensure it is a medium temperature.

Bake for 25-30 minutes.

Ta Da....

This is the end result and goodness, it is yummy. Not to brag but I kept hugging myself and dancing around when I tried it for the first time. You would enjoy this, especially with the spices and sauce buried under the layers of rice. It is an awesome comfort food, for the family, an event, and just suitable for any time, anywhere and any place.

If you end up making this or trying any of my recipes, you can always share them with me on my Instagram or Twitter page. I really hope you enjoy this. It's okay if the first try does not turn out well, that's the fun in learning new things. Keep trying until you get the perfect taste for your buds.

Stay awesome, and all the love from me.
